Dear students,
The 2024/2025 academic year is your last year of training at ENSB. During your previous academic years of training, you have dealt in the American Civilization module with the various stages the United States went through before its independence. You have dealt with the Puritans and Pilgrims, the American Colonial Era, the American Revolution, and Immigration. This year’s Civilization Program casts light on the political, social, cultural, and economic changes that took place in the United States following its independence till the Great War 1914-1918; that is, the ultimate objective of this module is to explore the political and economic development the USA had witnessed during the 19th century which made it the strongest nations of the 20th century. The second part of this module deals with American literature. American literature upholds the knowledge you already acquired in the first semester where you dealt with American Civilization. It provides you with an avenue into a deeper and more discerning understanding of American Culture as well as the social change that occurred in the U.S. society. In this regard, it is highly recommended to make a bridge between Civilization and Literature by invoking your acquired knowledge of Civilization for the sake of broadening your comprehension of the literary texts. In brief, this part is dedicated to exploring the realistic literary writings. This would be manifested through examining in depth Stephen Crane’s “The Red Badge of Courage” and "The Open Boat".
